We first came across the artwork of Elijah and Frederick Cawthorne some years back, when some of their works came up at auction. At the time, we couldn’t find out much about them or their works, but we thought their paintings were beautifully done. We’ve been researching the Cawthorne artists since then, and published a book on the Cawthornes in 2019.
In October 2019 Rachel gave a talk at the Clitheroe Civic Society about the artists and their works, which generated a lot of interest. 2020 marks the 70th anniversary of Frederick Cawthorne (1877 – 1940), landscape artist and son of artist Elijah Cawthorne (1843 – 1913) and the idea was floated of holding a community exhibition of their works in Clitheroe.
A Virtual Exhibition was held in September 2020 as part of the Heritage Open Days events. The exhibition is thought to be the first ever exhibition of their works.
We’ve had some lovely feedback on the exhibition, so we’re leaving these pages up a little longer. Our research into the Cawthornes is on-going, and we’d love to see more images of their works.
If you have a painting and would like it added into the virtual Gallery, please take a high-resolution photo of the work, and send it to Rachel at rachel@penroseantiques.co.uk. Please include the size of the work, along with any other information about it.
We hope to publish a fuller work on the Cawthornes next year, including a Catalogue of all known works.
